How do I start making my own game?

Today I’m going to tell you how two and a half years of game design allowed me to see a shortcut to my first game for aspiring developers and enthusiasts:

What did I try before Unity?

I’ll leave some useful tips and instructions for developing my first game in the video, and in this article I’ll talk about where I started making games before I became a game designer and discovered Unity and C# for prototyping.

So, top 3 weird ways to make a game:

  1. Power Point (yes, that presentation program from Microsoft)

Didn’t know you can make a game here? When you’re 14 years old and you don’t know that one day Adobe Illustrator will appear and game engines are 95% obscure symbols and 5% interface, you have to get out of it. When I was a kid, my brother and I used to organize a kind of hackathons, where you had to develop a game in a few days. So there were little RPGs, arcades and even quests in the spirit of Stephen King stories:

  1. Board games.

When you’re 16, inspired by Magic The Gathering and know nothing about copyrights, you’re willing to use any way you can to compensate for your lack of drawing ability. In fact, board games are a great simulator for any game designer, because with so many limitations (no computing power, just cardboard, numbers, UI, and illustrations), you have to get creative. One of the fun ways to test the workability of a mechanic or game idea is to make a paper prototype.

  1. Twine (HTML+CSS)

The first “programming languages” I learned were HTML and CSS. Bonus was the basics of JS, which really came in handy. I took some courses on frontend and made websites, but my thirst to make games did not subside, so I found Twine – engine for making text quests, where you can use markup languages and style sheets. If you want, the game made here can even be released on Android. I took a small card RPG and the implementation was a living hell. The platform is clearly not designed for complex games. In Unity this is all much easier to do.

Surely you’ve made games in applications that aren’t designed for this. Or maybe you have used game editors that just couldn’t take it and crashed under the weight and genius of your ideas. Either way it’s interesting, be sure to tell ?
